Electrical Safety Tip

Portable heater safety

Portable heaters can ignite nearby items such as curtains, bedding, and upholstered furniture.

An electric space heater needs a wall outlet. Extension cords and power strips are unsafe ways to supply it.

A sleeping person cannot monitor a running heater. CPSC advises switching portable heaters off before sleep.

Leave at least three feet between a portable heater and anything that could burn, including curtains, furniture, and bedding.

Connect an electric space heater straight to a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or extension cord.

Switch the heater off before going to sleep. Make shutting it down part of your bedtime routine.
