Electrical Safety Tip

Portable generator safety and backfeeding

Fuel-powered portable generators produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas you cannot see or smell.

A garage or partly enclosed space can trap generator exhaust, even when doors are open.

Plugging a generator into a household wall outlet can send electricity back onto utility lines and endanger repair crews.

Run a portable generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home and other buildings, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents.

Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Have a qualified electrician install approved transfer equipment before connecting a generator to home wiring.

Use battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms. If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.
