Electrical Safety Tip

Extension cords are temporary

An extension cord is a temporary power connection, not a replacement for permanent household wiring.

A cord’s electrical rating limits the load it can safely carry. Too much current can overheat its wires.

Furniture legs and foot traffic can crush cord insulation or damage the wires inside, creating fire and shock risks.

Check cords for cracks, fraying, or other damage before use. Stop using a damaged cord and replace it.

Route cords away from walking paths and keep them uncovered. Do not trap them beneath furniture or rugs.

If an extension cord has become a permanent fixture, move the device closer to an outlet or ask an electrician about adding an outlet where you need it.
